BIO
Hello! My name is Nick Andreyko and I am a student at Penn State University majoring in Engineering. I am a current freshman looking into Mechanical Engineering as well as applications in medicine. This year, I am taking Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, and introductory engineering classes such as Engineering Design and a Mechanical Engineering seminar. I also love history greatly so it was nice to take an Honors Ancient Near Eastern Mythology course in my first semester. CAS (Communications Arts and Sciences) is also another area that interests me and I have taken two classes this year. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at

My Rhetoric and Communication Philosophy
My experience in the CAS series of classes this year has taught me much about effective communication. Effective communication is essential to any profession and especially the discipline of engineering. One major problem in engineering is lack of communication. Lack of communication has caused many accidents and has even cost lives. As an engineering student I have taken much from these classes. You could perform the best study or have really great research, but if this occurs without good communication, or "in a vacuum" as my EDSGN professor said, it might has well of not even happened. As an effective communicator, one needs to engage the audience in many different ways, whether that be a visual presentation or a speech. This involves effective platform movement, eye contact, and voice. I personally feel that confidence and emotion play a huge part in any oral speech. If you do not love your work as a presenter and present it in an attentive manner, the audience members will turn off and this information will not be dispersed properly.
I have also learned much about rhetoric where one tries to inform, motivate, or persuade others about a particular subject or point of view. Deliberation is key and this was practiced multiple times throughout class sessions and participating in online commentary on hot button topics. Deliberation involves keeping calm and discussing an issue with others. Nothing is accomplished through yelling or name calling, only through reasoned discussion and mutual respect between participants. Differing opinions do exist and these will be brought out during a deliberation session. Becomin well versed on a topic really helps as well. Accurate information can defeat many arguments and clear up any general confusion in a debate. I feel that I have grown exponentially as an effective communicator this school year and have seen so through my presentations and speeches. I hope to grow in this area even more in the future.
